Ben Sullivan gave more information on the question:
Host = Windows 7 64 bit
VM = VMWare Windows 7 32 bit
Symptom = Sikuli cannot find the image file.  I have tried absolute paths, changing the SIKULI_IMAGE_PATH, explicitly settings location via Settings.BundlePath - none of these seem to work.  Note I am using the Java API and not the Sikuli IDE.

What other weird behaviour have you seen when using VMs?

Do you think there's scope to enhance the image recognition engine to
cope with things like windowing style changes?  I'm guessing there's
going to be some kind of text involved in the image capture to make it
unique enough to match on.
