I just tested on my Win7 64Bit with the latest build from http://sikuli.org/hudson
(it is a zip. unzip and replace the contents of folder Sikuli X with content of Sikuli-IDE from zip)

I had no problem starting FF7 with:
ff = r"c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
openApp(ff)

--- os.system
yes, this works too. "same" solution.
ff = r'"c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"'
openApp(ff)
# mind the additional single apostrophes.
