Interestingly, I am at the same crossroads.
I used the standalone api (and added a remote interface) which works but there is no support (not even answers to questions posted). 

I am hoping that RaiMan will include this (remote) functionality in the
next Beta and he has a plan to further develop the text recognition (I
think).

The future looks brighter here :)
