Looks like this issue is specific to MS Excel 2013. I installed OpenOffice Calc on my machine and used it to open my .xlsx file. When I ran my sikuli script, it worked fine. Contents from the excel sheet were copied into the variables without any issues!!

When I developed this script, I was using MS Excel 2007. Recently, I
upgraded to MS Excel 2013.
