RaiMan proposed the following answer:
SikuliX only sees the pixels on the screen, can find captured images
(matches) and act on these matches using Java AWT Robot.

SikuliX does not know anything about the internals of a GUI or even that
it is a GUI.

Hence it does not matter by what means the contents are brought to the
screen.
