The Preview stuff is a mess and will be rewritten with version 1.2.

Until then: if you face problems with it, you currently have to simply
live with it or do not use it.

You might try with version 1.1.0 though.

One more thing, that might help and what you might not have realized
yet:

menu View has a switch (ctrl-T), to switch between the image thumb view and the pure code view.
So you might add/change the Pattern settings in the code view directly

Instead of the image thumb view you can switch to a more readable image label view.
