Ok, but then you could use different functions with parameters, that
reflect the different use cases.

You might pack your defs into a module and then be able to setup a main
workflow, that does what you want.

I think, this is normal scripting.
I do not see any reason for your approach.

... and you might check, wether the Python unittest feature might help.
