the above mentioned value is there, because it has been there from the
beginning of Sikuli ;-)

On modern systems with Java 6+ one usually only need to specify heap
size or generally memory related options when running into problems with
the defaults (which in turn are optimised based on the system running
on).

On systems with low memory (< 4 GB) one might run into problems with the
defaults in rare situations using Sikuli.
