RaiMan proposed the following answer:
only the first question has something to do with your case, since only
here we talk about using SHIFT together with arrow keys to highlight
text.

Generally this only works (as it does manually), if you first get the
caret to the left of the text (it must be possible, to enter text in
this situation). Then using shift+arrow should select the text.

So just make an appropriate test case, and make your experiences.
