RaiMan proposed the following answer:
The behavior was changed with 1.1.1 dated 20th of May.

If nothing else is said, then an image that cannot be loaded from the
image path generally leads to a script abort, since in most cases this
is an error situation that has to be corrected and to continue the
script does not make sense.

If this error is by intention, then there are now new features to handle the situation:
