TC proposed the following answer:
if nothing else works, a workaround i found is to have a short wait in
the beginning of the script, move the mouse out and minimize it.

say you move your mouse out of the vm window at (420,0). on the vm
machine it just assumes nothing happened, and when the wait is over,  it
will continue even minimized.
