daxm confirmed that the question is solved:
I don't think I'm using the "nightly" build.  That said, I tried to
figure out which version I had installed and it appears that it loads
now!

I don't know why it works today and not the other day.  I don't think
I've even rebooted since my last attempt.  Very strange.
