sane had a field "source" which is not exposed to the simple-scan UI. 

While it is possible to select between "single page" and "all pages from feeder" that does not provide all options.

For my scanner (brother MFC-J5720 DW) the following options are available:

 * FlatBed
 * Automatic Document Feeder(left aligned)
 * Automatic Document Feeder(left aligned,Duplex)
 * Automatic Document Feeder(centrally aligned)
 * Automatic Document Feeder(centrally aligned,Duplex)

Being able to decide duplex is an essential feature imho.
