Did your laptop come with Windows 7?  If the answer is yes, you cannot
run linux in speed mode without either downgrading your BIOS (which will
mean disabling nVidia in Windows 7), or performing some modification in
linux, for which you can follow my blog post here:

If your laptop didn't ship with Windows 7, please find out what version
your BIOS is and reply here with the version and a copy of
/var/log/Xorg.0.log after trying to boot linux in speed mode.
