no desktop effects in Ubuntu 10.04

Hi All,

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 today, and used the janitor
script to install the sony-laptop module and intel and nvidia drivers. I
think everything worked out fine; that is running 'lspci -v' i do see
that depending on the position of the switch the NVIDIA card pops up or
not. Also the xserver starts, and gives a fine screen.

The problem I have though, is that the GUI does not behave as before.
When I start a new program, the window overlays the menu bar on the top,
and I cannot access the menu anymore (e.g. to start another program).
Also I have only one desktop area (instead of the four by default). I
figured, it had something to do with the 'visual effects'. I have tried
to set it to 'normal' and 'extra' in via System > Preferences >
Appearances. But neither for the NVIDIA card nor for the INTEL card I
succeed. I always get the message 'Desktop effects could not be
enabled'.

Anyone any idea?

Thanks in advance!
