Re: What to expect with ubuntu on Vaio Z-series?

Hi Jonas,

I'm running Natty Narwhal on a VPCZ1390X, and so far everything is working except:

* the built-in microphone. I use a clip on microphone plugged in to the mic jack to make skype calls.

* I'm not using the NVIDIA graphics card. I got it working, but it was too much of a pain in the ass to switch on and off so I just have it off and use the Intel card.

* Everything else I've tried does work, including built in webcam, memory stick, external monitor, etc.

Documentation of my install process is here: http://linux-on-sony-vaio-z.wikispaces.com/VPCZ1390x

The short summary: install natty, from a USB stick, and you should be fine. On boot don't panic if you have to wait through about 10 seconds of black screen :)

schock

You should be fine. I haven't tested the memory stick (sd works fine) but the only issue I see from your list is the microphone. I (and many others) have been unable to get it to work. I've given up for now and use my Bluetooth headset when I need a mic.
On my box, everything works except the mic and a weird stuttering issue that makes suspend useless in speed (nvidia) mode.

Subject: [Sony-vaio-z-series] What to expect with ubuntu on Vaio Z-
series?

Hi,
im considering buying a sony vaio z-series laptop for work use, but
I'm reluctant as:
- I really want to use Ubuntu on it
- I need the basic functionality to work under Ubuntu, that is: screen
with hardware-acceleration and full screen resolution,
speakers/microphone, memory stick, webcam
- I cannot have problems like having the fan staying on all the time,
or similar issues.
- I need to be able to update the system with security-patches in a
simple manner (no kernel-kompiling or stuff like that)

Should I go for a vaio z-series, what would be my chance of succeding
with the goles above?

regards Jonas
