I'm using a Vaio VGN-Z890.

X crashes shortly after startup (CPU pegged, can still move mouse, as 
soon as any key pressed machine freezes).

The problem is a crash in the nouveau driver. My workaround is to remove 
the nouveau module from /lib/modules/<your kernel 
version>/kernel/driver/gpu/drm/nouveau
then dpkg-reconfigure <your kernel package>

Now I can reboot and use X.
