Re: Power usage of 12.04 on vaio Z13
Hallo,
I also use latest Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot my hacked Z13 (VGA
switching set to 'static') in Stamina mode the Nvidia card is disabled
and not consuming any power. As said in a previous post I only use the
Intel card and get between 10 and 15 W. In Speed mode I also get a much
higher power consumption around 20 W. If I set VGA switching to the
default value (as in a non-hacked Z13 BIOS), both cards make power
consumption between 25 and 30 W.
So I do think that, if you manage to turn off the Nvidia card, your
power consumption will drop.
I have no experience with VGA switching in the default (dynamic)
behaviour. I know there have been solutions in the past that require
kernel patches and shell scripts. Maybe there's something new now, but
you would have to investigate.
The BIOS hacking went without any problems. It just worked.
I also have dual boot with the preinstalled Windows 7 intact on a
smaller partition. Windows needs the BIOS VGA switching set to
'dynamic'.
Does anyone know if PRIME will be an answer to our GPU
enabling/disabling problem?

Hi all!
After some promising reports here I installed Ubuntu beta 2 on my Vaio
Z13 (in the meantime with sudo update performed several times). While
most things work fine, power consumption is a big issue. Even with
wireless turned off, power consumtion is always about 25W, typically
27W. The nvidia card is always running but I doubt that this alone
explains this much. I also ran the powertop utility and switched all
suggestions to "good" with the exception of killing the external mouse.
In the reports of power consumption of about 10W there have been notes
on a hacked bios. Is this neccesary? I use my machine (up to now
mostly under Win 7) for serious work and can't afford a risky
operation. I case one can do it a modest risk, where can I find a
description?
Any suggestions?
