Message #02903
SVZ13, PMD and fglrx drivers
Has anyone had any success getting the PMD working with the ATI proprietary
fglrx catalyst drivers? I managed get the ATI card working fine with the
open source radeon drivers which is fine for work however the performance
of the radeon drivers is substantially worse then the fglrx drivers and I
would prefer to use them.
I tried installing the fglrx drivers and updated xorg.conf to use the fglrx
driver instead of the radeon driver however when I boot the machine it
hangs shortly after boot. If I boot to a live CD to recover and check
kern.log I see the following error messages:
Dec 27 13:07:11 gnunn-laptop2 kernel: [ 11.925204]
<3>[fglrx:hal_read_VBIOS] *ERROR* Invalid AMD VBIOS!
Dec 27 13:07:11 gnunn-laptop2 kernel: [ 11.925207]
<3>[fglrx:hal_init_gpu] *ERROR* Failed to read VBIOS!
Dec 27 13:07:11 gnunn-laptop2 kernel: [ 11.925208] <6>[fglrx] device open
failed with code -1
The xorg.0.log has a message to the effect the device could not be found on
PCI bus 22. The above messages about the bios look reminiscent of the
original PMD bug report however I'm running kernel 3.6.9 and my
understanding is that the patch for fixing this has been applied already.
I'm wondering if anyone has been able to get the fglrx drivers working with
this machine and could shed some light on what your configuration was.
Cheers,
Gerald
