"V. CONCLUSION
In summary, we show in this paper that nonlinear science tools can be
useful to characterize the performance of modern microprocessor
architecture. Applying nonlinear time series analysis methods to
collected traces of the architectural state, we could distinguish
between stochastic, chaotic and periodic deterministic performances.
More specifically, our results strongly support the idea that the
execution of several programs consists of a lowdimensional chaotic
system. The accompanying sensibility to initial conditions is
moderate, but remains comparable to that observed for the R¨ossler's
system. It implies that precise long-term prediction of the
performance for these programs is not accessible. Yet, because
variations on a strange attractor are bounded, this does not exclude
the possibility to predict average values, which is the aim of several
prediction methods [37, 38].
Furthermore, our results confirm that program executions on modern
microprocessor architectures form complex systems. We thus think that
performance analysis as well as optimization would benefit from
application of other tools borrowed in the field of nonlinear or
complexity science.
