Nej den kendte jeg ikke, men havde forsøgt rådene fra en anden.

Jo, men  wiki havde svaret tak for det:

You need to install glibc-locales

swup --install glibc-locales

var dog allered installeret i sidste version, men

 Edit /etc/locales.conf and uncomment locales wanted then run 
/usr/sbin/locales-gen
gjorde udslaget

/usr/sbin/locales-gen
Generating desired locale(s).
This may take some time.
da_DK UTF-8 ...done
da_DK ISO-8859-1 ...done

så en gesntart af httpd:
> service httpd restart
Shutting down httpd: [  OK  ]
Starting httpd: [  OK  ]

Og vupti så er dansk fungerende i squirrelmail.
Har sat det til sdandard, men skulle der komme en engelsman forbi, så 
kan han vælge engelsk (hvis han altså forstår dansk menu :-) )
