Would be very nice! I have some experience in developing iPhone
applications so if the api is available I could have a stab at that.

I would prefer a simple weadspread protocol. xml-rpc or something and
not one tied to a specific language. For example smuxi (the irc client I
use) uses some .net library and another project uses pyro (python remote
objects) and then it's difficult (so not impossible) to develop client
in another programming language.

Would it be an idea to tie it in with xmpp so you can use xmpp both for
notifications and the api?
