I have this issue of "open: Permission denied Error locking counter"
when trying to mount my home folder from a live sesion. I used the guide
on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedPrivateDirectory.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: mountall

I am running the system off LVM:

  /dev/mapper/vg00-root on / type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro)
  /dev/mapper/vg00-var on /var type ext3 (rw,relatime)
  /dev/mapper/vg00-usr on /usr type ext2 (ro,relatime)
  /dev/mapper/vg00-home on /home type ext3 (rw,relatime)
  /dev/mapper/vg00-opt on /opt type ext2 (ro,relatime)

and occasionally system fails to boot displaying the message "/(var|opt|home) failed to mount" - wait/skip/ go to maintenance shell.
This looks awfully like bug #527666 but it claims to be fixed while I am still experiencing this issue.

It is possible to mount the partitions with mount -a, and the system
continues to boot after maintenance shell is exited. However ~/Private
  ecryptfs becomes unavailable due to:

  rtg@buzz:~$ ecryptfs-mount-private
  Enter your login passphrase:
Inserted auth tok with sig [ae9ed25cb6615b05] into the user session keyring
  open: Permission denied
  Error locking counter

The problem with ecryptfs happens every time some partition fails to mount and it is mounted manually.
I am adding the info about ~/Private problem in order to show that mount -a is not a proper workaround for mountall failure.

  Here's the content of /dev/mapper:
  rtg@buzz:~$ ls -la /dev/mapper/
  total 0
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 160 2010-04-12 13:49 .
  drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 3940 2010-04-12 13:50 ..
  crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 59 2010-04-12 13:49 control
  brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 4 2010-04-12 13:49 vg00-home
  brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 2 2010-04-12 13:49 vg00-opt
  brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 0 2010-04-12 13:49 vg00-root
  brw-rw---- 1 root root 252, 1 2010-04-12 13:49 vg00-usr
  brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 3 2010-04-12 13:49 vg00-var

I am attaching syslog and debug logs that were written during this
  boot.
