Title:
Please close upstream Launchpad translations
Status in Unity:
Fix Released
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Bug description:
In the Ubuntu l10n teams, we require people to get membership in order
to edit translations. This way we can review the work done by random
people, which increases consistency of translations.
Unity, unity-place-files and unity-place-applications are open for
translation in Launchpad as upstream projects, which means anybody can
do what he wants on them. This is a real issue for us, because
normally upstream takes precedence over Ubuntu-specific changes. So we
can't control the quality of Unity translations. Moreover, we
constantly have to keep in sync Ubuntu translations and upstream
translations, which is silly since they use the very same
infrastructure (Rosetta).
So please close translations of Unity upstream, and leave to the
Ubuntu l10n teams the translations. Or only allow these teams to
translate upstream. As a general rule, translations provided by random
people are of very low quality and of poor consistency, and are a
burden to fix.
