  what i have to say....... this is an oooold bug

  but everytime i install buntu i got it,i have even find out the
  solution but it seems it doesn't matter anyway here there the question
  with the solution and informations about hplip

  i will report one more time the solution here for who has my problem
  too in buntu family,...i have just tried on lucid again and i have
  tried the solution and it works.

  
  you know with the standard  installation ,by the system ,you get this like URI

  
  hp:/usb/photosmart_7700_series?serial=MY396220QQK6

  you need to replase with this

  usb://hp/photosmart%207700%20series?serial=MY396220QQK6

  note %20 = _

  and with this stupid modification you got your printer on the way..
  without freeze.

  you can modify the URI via terminal with

  sudo nano  /etc/cups/printers.conf

  then set it like default printer with

  lpoptions -d “hp_photosmart_7700_series”

  hope this will be fixed some one day sigh.
