Since the proper fix as noted is in unity8, the question is what can we
do in the short term to provide a better user experience given that
scopes cannot directly access widget properties.

One possibility: switch from carousel to horizontal-list

This provides more space for very long names and provides an ellipse in
the rare case where a name is so long it needs to be truncated.

Please see attached for how this looks with my very long contact names.

  Please see the attached screenshot. The name should read 'Some Gorge'
  but 'g' in 'Gorge' is not fully visible.
