  clicking gmail launch icon causes system to hang

Status in webbrowser-app package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  I click on the gmail icon in the launcher and a window opens, but remains blank/white.  
  There is no cursor and the system reacts to neither keyboard nor mouse.
  Occasional the little drum roll sounds, but nothing is apparent on the screen.
