[Bug 1364078] [NEW] Cannot set screen resolution above 1400x1050

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Since installing Ubuntu 14.04, I have not been able to adjust the display resolution to 1920x1080.
My current Ubntu version is Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS.
My video card is an AMD/ATI RV710, which displayed at high resolution with Ubuntu 12.04.
The Ubuntu 14.04 open-source driver showed options between 640x400 and 1280x1024. I tried the proprietary driver, which set the resolution at 1400x1050 with no other options. I tried to remove the proprietary driver, but rebooting has me stuck at 1400x1050.
