Title:
"departments" is an awkward way to say "categories"
Status in “unity-scope-click” package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Bug description:
In the app scope, apps can be displayed by their logical group, in a
hierarchy. Internet apps, games, word processing, etc. These groups
are called departments, like a department store.
As far as I can tell, the usual term for this is "categories" instead
of "departments". Not a huge issue, but a little awkward, especially
for western-hemisphere folks.
A couple extra data points here, from the mailing list:
From: Nathan Haines <nhaines@xxxxxxxxxx>
Just as a usage note, this is perfectly identical in American English. But the
Ubuntu desktop already uses the term 'category' and "department" feels much
more suited to a physical store. (Specifically a department store.)
So that may help explain why it feels a little out of place.
From: Matthew Paul Thomas <mpt@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Ubuntu Software Center used to have "Departments". We switched to
"Categories" in 4.0, because that made more sense given the existence
of subcategories.
