Tiwai's suggestion is the following:
"OK, could you try to add the following to /lib/firmware/alsa/test
[codec]
0x10ec0292 0x17aa5036 0
[hint]
power_save_node = 0
... and add patch module option to snd-hda-intel, e.g. put the following
in /etc/modprobe.d/50-hda.conf:
options snd-hda-intel patch=,alsa/test
(Note that the comma after "patch=" is no typo but intentional, meaning
to skip the first object.)"
The original suggestion does not fix the issue but after changing the
subsystem id 0x17aa5036 to 0x102805de the crackle is gone and only a
barely audible pop is heard (much less startling than the crackle).

Bug description:
I hear a loud crackling sound whenever the login screen appears. There
is also a crackling sound when the notebook wakes from suspend and an
attempt is made to play any sort of audio.
This system was upgrade from 15.04 to 15.10 using the system updater.
