but the length of the noise should be configurable; some 15 years ago I have had an old mobile which spent the rest of the energy in playing the warning :-)

I suppose it might beep (configurable sound?) once at 10%, then at 5% and after that every 10 minutes, by default. With an option for beeping every 20, 10, 5 and 2 minutes after the 5% mark.
All this when the screen is off, of course. A visual cue should be
enough if the screen is on.

There's no audible warning when the battery charge is very low. Only
way to know about the low charge is by looking at the phone screen.
