Do you happen to have a copy of your /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log file
with information about your upgrade from Vivid to Wily? This is likely a
duplicate of bug 1509305.

Title:
  additional drivers fails to properly install nvidia driver

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  After experiencing display errors with 352 (default at install), I
  used additional drivers to test the 340 driver.

  After reboot, the screen resolution was maximum 800 x 600.  After
  reverting back to 352, remained at 800 x 600.

  Normal/expected screen resolution is 2560 x 1600.

  Running sudo nvidia-xconfig made no difference.

  Running gksudo nvidia-settings presented and unrecognizable nivida-
  settngs screen.

  Copying a working xorg.conf file from another dist on this computer
  changed the resolution to 1280       × 960
