Title:
11.10 Unity Visually broken Gallium .4 AMD CAYMAN drivers

Status in Unity:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I am using Ubuntu 11.10 RC x64, and have a AMD Radeon HD 6950 graphics
card and am using the open sourced graphics drivers.

After using unity for about 2-3 minutes, something happens to Unity
that causes it to visually break. The breakage is usually refined to
menu's and the desktop, and does not halt my usage of the system, but
it is very annoying and is a very large bug.

The breakage looks like horizontal orange and white bars spanning
across my screen just below the top bar. The Unity Dock icons are half
drawn and distorted, and all of the menu's and text have weird
artifacts embedded in the font. The artifacts look like random lines
and underlines and strike-throughs all over the text.

I have found things like "alt-tab" can break the desktop, if a window
hangs and fails to close properly it can break the desktop, adding
things to the Unity Dock can break the desktop. This has been
happening ever since I installed 11.10 during beta 1, and would love
to get this fixed by release.

I think this is isolated on Cayman cards, as I have my laptop has a
mobility radeon hd 4250 card with the standard Gallium drivers and it
  does not have this issue.
