Updated the 3.16.0-14 booted O.K. four times.
Installed rc5.  Booted O.K.

At grub menu, Advanced options, did
e
then F10
enter on rc5
booted to command line.  ?

Anyway, bug as originated  has not recurred so assumed fixed by the
update.
