The only difference between the "working" and "non-working" version that
I spot, is the -i argument to env, but I'm not sure why/how the empty
environment would affect this.

  expected output:
  bash: X: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `='
  bash: X: line 1: `'
  bash: error importing function definition for `X'
  id

  actual output:
