This bug is still present in 14.10. Is there any kind of a workaround to
get rid of it? I don't use the launcher for this reason.

  removing shadow between launcher and panel

Bug description:
  removing the panel shadow ( blank file from /usr/share/unity/theme )
  is working as expected my panel does nt hav a shadow anymore but just
  on top launcher there is a small shadow i can't remove.

  uncheck the decoration plugin from ccsm is not working the shadow is
  always displayed so i do not understand how to change this behavior
