  Ubuntu 14.10 r203

  1. Wait until software updates are available.
  2. Look at the System Settings icon in the Dash.

  What you see: It appears as normal.

  What you should see: "Wherever the System Settings icon appears, it
  should have a badge with the number of updates available."
