Its because the connection wasn't managed by network-manager.

  whoopsie seems to be always reporting that it is offline:

  May 16 09:50:37 flash whoopsie[1527]: message repeated 50 times: [ offline]
  ....
  May 16 11:22:58 flash whoopsie[22500]: whoopsie 0.2.24.5 starting up.
  May 16 11:22:58 flash whoopsie[22500]: Using lock path: /var/lock/whoopsie/lock
  May 16 11:22:59 flash whoopsie[22501]: offline
