[Bug 1407929] Re: [phone] Can't get a GSM connection faster than 2G

@Michael

Sorry for the delay in response... RTM has been first and foremost on
everyone's plate...

Thanks for the detailed bug report too. FYI, network-test-session was
originally designed for tracking location-service and nuntium bugs.
That said, I was able to gather some useful information from the logs.

First, a couple of questions...

1. Has the device ever connected at faster connection speed or has it
been fixed at 2g from the start?

2. You state that krillin has no issues connecting at faster speeds.
Are both devices using SIMs from the same operator? If not, can you try
switching the SIM from the krillin into the mako to see if it makes a
difference?

3. When it finally connected in 3g, did it stay that way, or did it
eventually fall back to 2g again? If you can get it to switch to 3g
again, could you run the following command and add the output to the
bug?

$ /usr/share/ofono/scripts/list-modems

Also, please attach the output of 'list-contexts' ( in the same dir ) as
well.

A couple other comments:

 * looking at the syslog, it appears that the device isn't every truly
going into deep sleep as evidenced by the some ~3k "Suspended for 0.000"
seconds messages.

 * I see a kernel message that states: "rmnet_usb0 no IPv6 routers
present". This may be harmless, but it may tie in to a later point.

 * Looking at the output of list-modems in the network-test-session.log,
I do indeed see that the ConnectionManager's "Bearer" property is set to
"edge" ( 2g ). Furthermore, 'NetworkRegistration' shows the
'MobileCountryCode'=260 ( Poland ) and MobileNetworkCode=03 ( Orange ).
However... the 'Name' is set to "nju", not "Orange". Is there any
chance that your wife is using a SIM from a MVNO that may be using
Orange's network?

 * I checked our APN database ( /etc/apns-conf.xml in the /system/etc/ )
and noticed that Orange includes the attribute 'authtype=1'. We ignore
this attribute, which might be causing the problem. When we discussed
whether or not to support this attribute, we were told by ofono upstream
that this was a deprecated parameter and would make no difference. That
said, we explicitly set it to 0 for MTK modems, so there's a chance this
might be causing problems.

 * Finally, I also noticed on the wikipedia page for Orange Poland, that
IPv6 ( which we don't yet support ) was rolled out in March 2013. You
wouldn't by any chance have access to an Android device you could use to
check the provisioning to see if IPv6 is configured?

Bug description:
  This might not be the place for this bug, please reassign as
  appropriate.

  My wife's mako does not seem to be able to connect to GSM data over
  any connection faster than 2G, on full signal, even though krillin
  right next to it connects in HSDPA just fine.

  Cellular settings is set at 2G/3G so that should not be a problem.
  Toggling plane mode doesn't help.

  After switching cellular data off and back on, finally it connected in
  3G (but still not HSDPA).

  Please find attached network-test-session logs from when I toggled
  Flight mode, Cellular data and Connection type to get there.
