Title:
incorrect resolution used on shutdown after using unity with an
  external monitor

Bug description:
When I boot my system with an external monitor attached, plymouth
correctly fills the screen with purple and the Ubuntu logo is
centered. When lightdm starts, the background fills the screen and the
cursor is centered. However, when logging into unity, the cursor moves
up and to the left a few inches. Unity then otherwise operates fine,
but on shutdown, plymouth's purple screen no longer fills the screen
and there is a several-inch black border along the right and bottom. I
have seen this for some time (I think ever since upgrading to 12.10),
but am only just now reporting it.
