It might also be worth noting that initially, the Xonar U7 produces a
broken pipe error, which is surpressed in order to access the item in
alsamixer.

  My Asus Xonar U7 Echelon External sound device working without input/capture device.
  No input device , Nothing recording with my usb soundcard.
