[Bug 1414278] Re: v14.04 screen garbled when waking from sleep w/external monitor

Viswa B, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As
per http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers an update to your
computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (1.11). If you update to
this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it
change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status New.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
v14.04 screen garbled when waking from sleep w/external monitor

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have installed v14.04 LTS 64 bit on Acer Aspire One 722 and
everything works fine. I then connected an external monitor via HDMI.
The external monitor (a HDTV) displays the laptop screen correctly.

But when I close the screen of the laptop with the external monitor
connected (putting the laptop to sleep), and open the screen to bring
back the laptop out of sleep mode, the screen of the laptop and the
external monitor are black with some garbled characters. The only way
to recover the session is to shut power off abruptly, and cold boot
  the laptop.

However, if I use the suspend button to put the laptop to sleep, and
then bring the laptop out of sleep mode, the laptop screen and the
external monitor display the desktop correctly.

Can someone please help me understand why closing the laptop screen
causes issues that are not present when I use the suspend command, and
  point me to a solution?
