I guess it's a duplicate of bug #1421967 then, which is fixed in vivid
but not in rtm (yet)

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1421967
String "Checking for updates…" cut in some locales

Title:
  Text in 'Updates' screen

Status in ubuntu-system-settings package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
When checking for updates in the 'Updates' screen the text says
  'Checking for update...'.

This is inconsistent with the title of the screen which uses the
plural 'Updates'. The message text should probably also use the plural
form and say 'Checking for updates...'

This is on Ubuntu 14.10 (r20).
