Cheers Martin. I applied that patch to Ubuntu's systemd package and
started the container with that.
Happy to report that it seems to work fine for me. The mounts stay
intact as they are supposed to.

Bug description:
I recently hit ENOSPC which turned out to be the result of various
syslogs from the current and previous boots totalling up to 30G.
They were filled with messages like
