I updated the BIOS as advised.

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

This did not change any of the symptoms I'm experiencing.

When snapping windows to the left or right of the screen, the windows
render fine.  As soon as I maximize the window, it starts giving
problems.  Please also see screenshot attached.

  Gnome Shell

Bug description:
  Windows in Gnome shell turn invisible. e.g. when opening Terminator
  and maximizing it, it turns invisible.  It shows up when going to
  Activities.  I have to use a shortcut to restore it to see it again.
  When maximizing SublimeText, there's tearing.
