Similar symptoms here; audio over HDMI worked fine until update yesterday.

  No more HDMI audio output visible/working snd_hda_intel Cannot turn on
  display power on i915

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  All of a sudden, I believe as a result of a kernel upgrade, I cannot
  play sound via my HDMI output (television). The option is not listed
  anymore in sound settings or VLC. Video output on hdmi works fine. The
  internal speakers work fine as well.
