Title:
Lucid: possibly memory leak in CUPS?

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: cups

I tried 2 times to print a PDF (~7 MB = 225 pages) to my HP LaserJet
5M per evince and with the PCL-driver (not Postscript).

  - The first time (pages 1-225) at some point the PC slows down to a
crawl with much disk activity until Gnome more or less died. Died
means Gnome didn't response anymore and I could at some point only see
the silhouette of the programs that where open... means: I could see
where my programs have been but could not see their content. From that
first try I will attach the relevant part from my syslog.

As I needed the PDF to get printed out and wanted to try to reproduce
  the problem I started...

  - The second time (pages 141-225). This time with the
"Systemüberwachung" (systemmonitor?) on my desktop so I could see what
happens to my RAM. I will attach a screenshot which will show the
slowly growing amount of RAM used while printing. This time syslog
shows nothing of interesst. Gnome just froze and I had to reboot.

  Maybe interessting details:
  Ubuntu 10.04 64bit
My PC has 2GB of RAM and 2,3 GB swap.
The PDF in question is a 7MB monster with a copied dissertation --> means: someone copied the paperpages and put the resulting images in that PDF. I can't upload it as I had to pay for it and I think that the copyright owner would not like to see me uploading his work to launchpad :-)
The first print job (pages 1-225) was about ~30 MB in size. The second one (pages 141-225) about ~10 MB. At least that was shown to me after clicking on the icon for the print jobs in queue.
My LaserJet has 22MB RAM in total.
I tried to print 2 pages from the PDF to one paper page to cut down the paper usage.
