Bill confirmed that the question is solved:
After launching install.php from my browser, it asked me for the
database name and so forth, so I assume the database must be up and
running before trying to run the install. Sorry everyone, I am a novice
at this stuff. Next problem is what is a prefix? I asked that question
in another post.
