Hi Dylan
I stand corrected... kind of. :o)
I haven't installed Ubuntu from the Desktop icon since my first install
of Feisty and I forgot that what you say *is* possible until I was
reminded by Colin's reply.
The only thing I can think of in this case is to set a flag depending on
where the install was started from, then displaying one of 2 slides with
or without the "explore" line. If this proves to be too time consuming a
fix my feeling is that it would be better to drop the line altogether.
>From my experience, that may or may not be typical, the person most
likely to use this feature is a first time user. Since the explore only
works from the desktop install icon, and then only if a person's
computer is fast enough, there is too much room for confusion that could
poison a first impression of Ubuntu. I think most people will, as I
did, try the Live CD session, then not worry about it after the install
has started.
My 2 cents,
Roy
P.S.
A possibility is to change the line to something like -
"If you started the install from the Desktop then you can continue
exploring Ubuntu during the install."

Status in “ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed
Bug description:
The message to "explore while installing" in the Karmic Alpha 5 installer slideshow gives the impression that you should be able to use the system while it is installing. This line should be changed or removed to avoid confusion.
