Message #00572
Meeting .....
I'm going to have to give apologies for tonight's meeting. Sorry about
that. Not a lot to report except the following I received from someone
I got up and running with 10.10.
Begin quote:
"I have been a Ubuntu 10.10 user for the past 3 months and have been
asked to pass on a few words on my initial reactions to working with
this operating system.
Until earlier this year I had not heard of Ubuntu and I was also a
total Linux virgin. I had worked in a design studio for many years
and had always used Apple Mac's, although I had also used, fairly
extensively, PC's with Windows. For preference Mac systems have
always been favourite. So it was a very pleasant surprise to find
that when I had an initial look at the Ubuntu home page it gave an
immediate feeling of working in the Mac environment. It was very user
friendly and providing you have had previous experience using either
a Mac or PC you would have no problem in negotiating the various
applications in the drop down menus they are very intuitive. Open
Office Word Processor I found to be the equal of Microsoft Word,
although having said that, I never have been able to utilise the full
facilities of Word and neither have I at the time of writing gone too
deeply into Open Office, but the basic word processing side is very
simple. Other great software that came with 10.10: Disc Burner, Movie
Player, Video Editor, Sound Recorder, Spreadsheet, Presentation,
Photo Manager, Scanner, Drawing/Graphics programme, plus usual games
and other bits and pieces. All have been easy to use and certainly
equal to their Microsoft counterparts.
Initial set-up of Ubuntu I found difficult as I tried to load the
system onto an external hard drive whilst still keeping Windows as
the main operating system on the internal hard drive. It didn't seem
to like being a sub-system and left me with the error message 'No
such device GRUB RESCUE' on my screen. I didn't understand the
principles of Grub Rescue so after some days of hair pulling and
knashing teeth I decided that since my main reason for loading Ubuntu
was to use it to run a web/blog (hosting company's seem to prefer
Linux as the operating system, generally charging a smaller monthly
subscription if you use Linux than Windows) then I would do away with
Windows entirely and use Ubuntu on my main hard drive and as my main
operating system. Fortunately I had purchased a new 'second hand'
computer specifically for the purpose and so whilst I had also
purchased additional Microsoft and other software which would be
redundant, the machine had nothing of importance that I didn't mind
losing. Reformatting the hard drive and loading from there was easy,
everything being done remotely from the installation wizard and have
had no problems since. It appears to be very stable and does
everything that I could get from a PC and an added bonus is that I
have found that by operating Ubuntu on my computer it is faster than
it was when loaded with Windows. And of course the big, big bonus is
that all the software is totally free! I haven't missed Windows at
all during these past 3 months.
One little niggle I do have is the amount of upgrades that seem to
automatically download, perhaps this is one of the downsides to
having community based programming with so many different people
involved in the process. On the plus side I have to give a big thumbs
up to the help that you can receive from the very friendly and
helpful members of the Ubuntu community, thanks to Barry in my case
for all his help and advice.
Congratulations to all who have worked on the programme and look
forward to seeing the latest Natty Narwhal 11.04 upgrade which is
supposed to be very exciting, although you apparently will need an
accelerated 3d graphics chipset to obtain full functionality so
probably won't help in my case." From John Rudland.
End quote.
Regards, Barry
